5 Things That Can Void Your Commercial Roof Damage Insurance Claim

As a business owner, you know that some risks come with the territory. One such risk is damage to your property –particularly your roof. Things That Can Void Your Commercial Roof Damage Insurance Claim

1. Not Filing A Claim Right Away

This is among the most common mistakes that business owners make. When they discover damage to their roof, they assume their insurance policy does not cover it or that it isn't severe enough to warrant filing a claim. So, they wait…and wait…and wait. But here's the thing: most policies have a time limit for when you can file a claim. If you wait too long, your warranty claim could be denied.

2. Making Repairs Before An Adjuster Arrives

When you file a claim, companies will send an insurance adjuster to inspect the damage. But in the meantime, you might be tempted to make some repairs yourself to prevent further damage. While this is understandable, it's important to know that making repairs before the adjuster arrives could void your claim.

That's because the adjuster needs to see the damage for him or herself to determine the extent of the coverage. So, unless necessary, please resist the urge to make any repairs until after the adjuster has had a chance to do their job.

3. Failing To Document The Damage

Once you've filed a claim and an adjuster has been sent out, it's crucial that you take pictures & videos of the damage and keep detailed records of repair estimates. This documentation will be key in helping your insurance company determine how much they should reimburse you. Without it, you could end up getting shorted on your claim.

4. Not Submitting A Claim Promptly

There's usually a short window of time in which you can file a claim after your roof has been damaged. This timeframe can differ depending on your insurer, so it's important to check with them immediately after the damage. Failing to do this can & will result in your claim being denied.

5. Making Repairs Without Your Insurer's Approval

Getting approval from your insurance company before repairing your roof is important, even if it's just temporary patching. Failure to get approved this may result in you not being reimbursed for those repairs or your entire claim being denied.
